Jesus Is Our Friend

By Barbara J. Scott
When you look at Facebook you see that some people have hundreds of friends, or so it seems. Just how do you define friend and how can one person have so many? The dictionary defines "friend" as someone with whom you have a bond with who is not a relative or sexual partner.
Jesus Is Our Friend

When you look at Facebook you see that some people have hundreds of friends, or so it seems.  Just how do you define friend and how can one person have so many? The dictionary defines "friend" as someone with whom you have a bond with who is not a relative or sexual partner. Webster says, "one attached to another by affection or esteem." That's a good one. Or how about the Urban Dictionary: "A friend is someone you love and who loves you, someone you respect and who respects you, someone whom you trust and who trusts you. A friend is honest and makes you want to be honest, too. A friend is loyal. °A friend is someone who tells you if you're being stupid, but who doesn't make you feel stupid. °A friend is someone for whom you're willing to change your opinions.  A friend is someone you look forward to seeing and who looks forward to seeing you.."  Hundreds of "friends", I don't think so. In order to be a true friend you have to really get to know that person. You have to develop a loving, caring relationship with that person; be willing to go out of your comfort zone to help in time of need; someone who can cheer you up when you are sad; someone you can tell your dearest secrets to and know they will not tell anyone else. A friend is someone who will laugh with you when you laugh and cry with you when you cry. A friend is someone who will lend you things, money, even their clothes and then tell you, you don't have to pay it back.  How many friends did you say you have?

Jesus calls us His friends, and He is more than we could ever imagine a friend to be.  He was willing to lay down His life for His friends (us). "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13. He said we are His friends if we do what He commands us to do. And what does He want us to do? "This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you." John 15:12.  Proverbs says that there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. There are brothers and sisters who are not as close and loving as some of those we call our friends. Jesus shared His life with His friends. He told them and is still telling us things that He heard from His Father. "But I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you." John 15:15b.  Jesus chose us to be His friends. Are you being a true friend to Jesus? How well do you know Him? John 15:16-17.
