Know God's Power Through Prayer

By Barbara J. Scott
I think we underestimate the power of prayer. Jesus did a lot of praying as He walked this earth and His disciples realized the power He walked in because they often saw and heard Him pray. That is why they asked Him to teach them how to pray. When they could not cast out the devil from the young man, Jesus told them some things only come out by prayer and fasting.
Know God's Power Through Prayer

I think we underestimate the power of prayer.  Jesus did a lot of praying as He walked this earth and His disciples realized the power He walked in because they often saw and heard Him pray.  That is why they asked Him to teach them how to pray.  When they could not cast out the devil from the young man, Jesus told them some things only come out by prayer and fasting.  They didn't forget what Jesus taught them; and as we read in the Book of Acts (the Acts of the Holy Ghost through the disciples), they were turning their world upside down. When Jesus gave them His guideline for prayer (Matthew 6:9-15), they took it and ran with it; they lived it, they believed it, they shared it.  How are we doing?

We cannot pray, "Our", if our faith has no room for others and their needs.  We cannot pray, "Father", if we do not demonstrate this relationship to God in our daily living.  We cannot pray, "Who Art in Heaven", if all of our interests and pursuits are in earthy things and we are not seeking "those things above". We cannot pray, "Hallowed be Thy Name", if I we are not striving for God's help to be holy. If we are not walking in the holiness of God, acknowledging that He is Holy; we cannot pray for His holiness to be in any situation. We cannot pray, "Thy Kingdom Come", if we are not willing to accept God's rule for our life.  We cannot pray, "Thy Will be Done", if we are unwilling or resentful of having it in our life: if we want to lean unto our own understanding and walk in our own way.  After Satan was cast out of heaven, there is no one up there wanting to do their own thing.  Nothing but God's will is being done! We cannot pray, "In Earth as it is in Heaven", unless we are truly ready to give ourselves to God's service here and now; and we are willing to allow Him to do what He wants to do in these "earthen vessels.  We cannot pray, "Give us This Day Our Daily Bread", if we are not eating the Bread as Jesus commanded; but are rejecting Jesus, Who is the Bread of Life: or if we are withholding from our neighbor, the Bread we receive.  We cannot pray, "Forgive Us Our Trespasses as We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us", if we continue to harbor a grudge against anyone and refuse to forgive them.  Jesus said His Father will not forgive us if we don't forgive others.  We cannot pray, "Lead Us Not Into Temptation", if we deliberately choose to remain or put ourselves in a situation where we are likely to be tempted.  We can't go knocking on the devil's door and ask God to lead us not into temptation.  We cannot pray, "But Deliver Us From Evil (or The Evil One)", if we are not prepared to fight the battle having on the Whole Armor of God. We must keep it on at all times, from head to toe (Ephesians 6:10-18). We cannot pray, "For Thine is the Kingdom", if we are unwilling to obey the King.  We cannot pray, "And the Power and the Glory", it we are seeking power for ourselves and our own glory.  We cannot pray, "Forever", if we are too anxious about each day's affairs and refuse to lay our burdens down, trusting that all power is in God's hands and there is nothing He cannot do.  We cannot pray, "Amen", unless we honestly say, "Not my will, but Thy will be done, so let it be."
